On January 1, 2011, history was made as fans filled Heinz Field for the NHL's Winter Classic, in which the Pittsburgh Penguins hosted the Washington Capitals. The game had originally been scheduled for 1:00pm, but due to concerns about rain, the game was shifted to an 8:00pm start. With 68,111 people in attendance, Pittsburgh legends Mario Lemieux, Franco Harris, and Jerome Bettis dropped the ceremonial puck.
Keeping with Winter Classic traditions, the Penguins wore new uniforms, based on those of their inaugural 1967–68 season. The navy and baby blue colors were reversed, and the jerseys featured a crest of their original skating penguin logo, in place of the diagonal letters. Though the Penguins lost 3-1, the primetime telecast led to tons of exposure for the NHL.
The lone Penguins goal was scored at 2:13 of the 2nd Period, a breakaway by Evgeni Malkin, who tucked the puck behind Semyon Varlamov to put the Penguins up 1-0. Assists were recorded by Kris Letang and Marc-Andre Fleury. Malkin went on to be named the game's third star. |
